Built around a simple childhood memory of a father tossing his little girl into the air and catching her again, the song follows that relationship as time moves forward and the meaning of being “up in the air” begins to change. What starts as a picture of childhood joy becomes a reflection on growing older, letting go, loss, and the kind of love that continues long after the moments themselves have passed.
For Hughes, who grew up in East Tennessee and now calls Texas home, the song represents the kind of storytelling that first drew him to country music.

This one started with a picture in my head,” Hughes says. “I could see a dad throwing his little girl up in the air and her knowing without a doubt that he was going to catch her. From there, I started thinking about how that relationship changes over a lifetime and how eventually those words can mean something completely different.”
The song has already begun connecting with listeners. “Up In The Air” was named Song of the Month by the Houston Songwriters Association, adding to the growing momentum surrounding Hughes and his original music. Chris Hughes is a member of the Texas Country Music Association.
“Up In The Air” appears on Hughes’ full-length album, My Heart’s In Tennessee, a collection of ten original songs drawing from traditional country, Americana, and the story-driven music that shaped him growing up in East Tennessee.
