Why I Wrote I Hear You, Love

When one of my kids takes a fall, I kneel down and say the same thing every time: “I hear you, love. You know pain is temporary, right?”

After a while I stopped saying the second part. Now I just ask, “What do we say about pain?” And they answer it themselves. That moment is the whole reason I wrote this book.

The Empty Tool Kit

I believe a newborn’s brain arrives like an empty tool kit. As parents, we start filling it long before we ever hold our child. In the womb they hear our voices. They feel our stress and our calm. Every touch, every word, every response hands them another tool, or leaves a space where a tool should be.

I Hear You, Love: Building Your Child’s Tool Kit from the Womb to the World is my way of handing new parents, young or older, a few more tools for their own kit.

Roll Over, Crawl, Walk, Run

The book follows the milestones every parent watches for. Rolling over. Crawling. Walking. Running. I use each one as a picture of how our children move through life, and how we can grow right alongside them. This first book goes from the womb through running. As my kids grow, the series will grow with them.

Stories From My Own Family

Everything in this book comes from my own home, shared with the blessing of my children’s mothers. You will read about the falls and the questions and the moments that taught me as much as they taught my kids. You will also read how my youngest son told me his name while he was still in the womb.

Simple Practices for Real Families

My other work is built around meditation, but this book keeps it simple, because real families are busy. Breathe slow. Take your time. Admit when you are stressed. Hold yourself in the loving energy of your kids. Those four things have saved me more times than I can count.

Why It Matters

I see this as a three-book series about how we shape the tool kits of the human brain, and how the wounds of the world can be lifted, one family at a time. It starts at home. It starts before the first breath.
