Firm encourages drivers to leave extra room around commercial trucks after the Oct. 22 crash near the Esplanade Avenue exit
NEW ORLEANS, LA, UNITED STATES, October 26, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — A dump truck crashed through a concrete barrier on eastbound Interstate 10 near the Esplanade Avenue exit Thursday afternoon, Oct. 22, and fell about 30 feet onto North Claiborne Avenue, WWL-TV reported. The truck landed on its side near St. Bernard Avenue, struck an unoccupied parked car, and spilled construction materials and fuel onto the street below.
The driver and a passenger were taken to University Medical Center in stable condition. According to New Orleans police, the driver swerved to avoid an accident on the overpass. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development is inspecting the damaged section of the overpass.
In light of the crash, Chopin Law Firm, a New Orleans personal injury firm, is encouraging drivers to take extra care on the city’s elevated highways, where there is little room to react when traffic changes suddenly.
“Most people who drive that stretch every day never think about what they would do if traffic stopped in front of them,” said Justin Chopin, owner and managing partner of Chopin Law Firm. “A little extra space gives you and the drivers around you time to react.”
The firm recommends that drivers on elevated sections of I-10 leave extra following distance, especially around commercial trucks, which need much more room to stop than passenger vehicles. Drivers should also stay out of a truck’s blind spots, slow down early when brake lights appear ahead, and keep phones out of reach.
If a crash happens, the firm advises drivers to move to safety if they can, call 911, and stay clear of leaking fuel or spilled cargo. Anyone hurt should get medical care promptly, even if their symptoms seem minor, because some injuries take time to appear.
“Crashes on elevated highways can turn serious in seconds,” Chopin said. “Getting checked out and getting the police report number are two of the most important things a person can do afterward.”
Chopin Law Firm represents people injured in car and truck accidents in New Orleans and throughout Louisiana. The firm offers free case evaluations and can be reached at (504) 475-2429.
